CHAPTER 9

This Valentine’s Day didn’t suck.

Ali bubbled like the champagne she sipped upon finishing the photoshoot at the thank-you lunch and celebration at Angel’s Rest that Sean had arranged. They had a table in a private parlor upstairs in Cavanaugh House with a glorious view of Hummingbird Lake and the kaleidoscope of hot air balloons that remained for the afternoon festivities.

She couldn’t wait to get home to see the session’s photographs on her monitor. She didn’t doubt they’d be spectacular. The shoot today had been nothing short of magical. So much love swirled inside the Beloved Chamber that she easily imagined the stalactite pumped it through invisible arteries and veins encircling the cavern. Even as she enjoyed sharing Jessica and Sean’s joy, she couldn’t help but feel a little envious.

But her eyes had been opened, too. She’d never had a bring-a-stalactite-to-life sort of love, not even with the man to whom she’d planned to pledge her heart for life.

“So,” Jessica said, waggling her brows at Ali. “In your text message, you said you actually met Luscious Lorenzo? Tell me everything!”

“Well, he flirted with me.”

“Eeek!”

Sean smirked and rolled his eyes.

“He danced with me and sang to me.”

“Okay, that’s a new side of Lorenzo from any I’ve seen.” Sean set down his champagne glass and leaned forward. “Let’s hear the details.”

She gave them a synopsized and censored version of events. Had she been lunching alone with Jessica, she would have mentioned the naked part of the story, but this wasn’t the time or place to describe Max’s naked parts. Jessica might swoon, and no sense making Sean feel inferior.

“What?” Jessica asked. She knew Ali well. “Inside joke?”

“I’m laughing at myself.” Then, casually, she added, “Max is going to join me for my horror movie marathon tonight. Well, actually, I’m going to join him. He’s taking me to his house. He has a theater room. We’re going to have pizza and popcorn.”

“On Valentine’s Day?” Jessica covered her mouth with her hand. “He’s talked you into breaking your vow? Oh, my little baby Cupid. I need to meet Max Romano.”

“It’s not a date,” Ali was quick to explain. “We’re just hanging out.”

Her best friend speared her with a look and shook a dessert fork her way. “Uh-huh. And did you or did you not tell us that he kissed you in the Beloved Chamber?”

“Well…yes.”

“And it was the hottest kiss you’ve ever had?”

“Well…yes…but….”

“And he’s picking you up and taking you out for a meal and a movie on Valentine’s Day.”

“You’re making it sound bad. Valentine’s Day has nothing to do with it.”

“No, Ali. I’m making it sound good! It sounds terrific. Whether you like it or not, today is February fourteenth, and you have a date. Therefore, it sounds to me like you’re finally moving past the scum whose name I shall not use but whose favorite golf clubs are now recycled cans holding horrible lite beer. Sean, sweetheart, top off our glasses, would you please? I want to make a toast.”

Once the flutes were filled, Ali’s best friend lifted her glass and said, “To new beginnings.
